Jacksonville, Fla. - The Southpoint Grill is located in a Jacksonville business park off of Southpoint Road. The manager, Eric, was not happy to see us and at first told us we were not allowed to take the camera in the kitchen. He said, "I'll talk to you but only off camera." He then asked our photographer to get outside and again insisted he wasn't allowed in the kitchen. We asked, "Why can't you bring our camera in?" He replied, "I'd rather not. I would just rather not. I had a health inspector catch me at a bad time."

After going back and forth for about five minutes, Eric told us we could have the camera come into the kitchen for thirty seconds.

The inspector found these violations in the kitchen:

20 violations, 16 critical
No hot water for the entire restaurant
Insulin shot stored with food in the fridge
Slime in the ice machine

Eric insists everything has been taken care of since the inspector came, "There's no slime, no mold. Everything has been taken care of. The hot water heater went out that day and the plumber was here fixing it when the inspector came."

We asked about the insulin shot stored next to the food and he replied, "It was on a shelf and not near the food and it didn't touch anything."

After looking around we found a few pieces of fresh bacon laying on top of a dish rag by the grill. We asked "Is this bacon supposed to be laying on there like that?" Eric said, "That's not the bacon we use. I don't know why that's there."

Eric says in this tough economy he needs his loyal breakfast and lunch crowd to keep on coming now more than ever. He wants everyone to know the restaurant is completely clean. "The accumulation of the hot water heater and the insulin pen and catching me at a bad time but everything's good! We're ready to go!"

Billy's Boathouse Grill on Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville had 22 violations. 16 of them were critical including:
Live flies in the kitchen

At Mario's of Neptune at the beach the inspector found:
Food not being stored at safe temperatures

These restaurants were temporarily shut down this week:

The Burger King at 9090 Merrill Road was closed because of roaches and live flies. It has since re-opened.

At The Chicago Pizza and Sports Grill on Independent Drive the inspector found rodent droppings on the pizza prep table.
It is also back open for business. The Manager, Justin Lipscomb, tells us, "The rodent droppings were on the bottom shelf where we put the pan containers before we put them through the dishwasher. When the health inspector stopped by he came across a couple of situations and we were very proactive in fixing the problems. We shut down for a few hours to fix those problems and we got the all clear before re-opening. In the past few years we have passed all of our inspections. We have a rodent company that came in immediately and they looked through the entire restaurant. I want our customers know that we take pride in taking care of them and we are trying to grow our brand and we are looking forward to serving the community as have the last four years."

The following three places get our clean plate award of the week!

To be completely honest, with all the issues we face these days restaurants are the least of my worries. I think the resources used to ambush restaurant workers could be better spent elsewhere. It has a lot of shock and not much substance.

The whole story was misleading, she did not tell people the plumber was there fixing the hot water heater and they had water boiling on the stove, nor did she mention the *dish rag * was a towel for the grill area. She only wants to tell her side that is negative not really happen

insulin must be refridgerated, since it was in the fridge, I will hazard a guess that someone there is a type 1 diabetic and has to take insulin daily.

The written story says "a needle full of insulin", this is very different from the video that said an insulin pen, which i do not have a problem being in the fridge. misleading headlines seem to be the norm for news today.

Oh NO! I keep my insulin in the refigerator with the rest of our food. Ya gotta luv ambush reporting when the facts are handed to you by someone else. Keep it up Tara, you're on a roll. Easy money, eh?
