Jacksonville, FLA. - Bonito Grill & Sushi is located on Centre Street in the heart of Fernandina Beach. It's known for it's sushi bar and sea bass. The restaurant has been open for 12 years. This week the state health inspector issued an emergency at the restaurant and it temporarily closed because of roaches.
Manager David Schaffer admitted right away - there was a roach problem. 61 lives ones to be exact. Here's what we found in the emergency report:
57 live roaches on the gaskets, door frames and reach in coolers
4 live roaches were found on the kitchen prep table
Dead roaches were also found in the kitchen
We asked Shaffer, "How did it get this bad?" He told us, "It's an old building and it's the South. We get them every now and then."
Schaffer told us everything has been cleaned and re-cleaned. He even offered to let us see inside the kitchen. He told us the roaches were by the back door. That's where we immediately noticed a live roach crawling up the door frame.
Shaffer says don't let this one roach fool you... it's a work in progress. He says the exterminator has been in two times already and is coming again this week.
Schaffer had this to say to his customers, "It's a failure in leadership on my part. We have a solid staff, good food... come in and see us."
An emergency order was also issued at Angel's Dining Car on Reid Street in Palatka. Roaches were the cause of the temporary closure there as well.
The Columbia Livestock Market Café in Lake City rounded out the top of the list for the restaurants with the most number of critical violations.
