Jacksonville, Fla. - In the last two weeks, the state health inspector made several visits to Cattlemens Real Pit BBQ on Atlantic Boulevard in Jacksonville. The restaurant was written up for critical violations including:

Live flies in the kitchen
The handwash sink used as a dump sink
The lid on the freezer rusted and falling off
Pork, beef and turkey not being held at safe temperatures

You can see both reports by clicking here and here.

Restaurant employee, Matt was happy to show us the kitchen. When we saw the handwash sink in the kitchen we immediately asked, "Do you dump things in there?" Matt answered, "No ma'am!" The sink was clean but we did notice right away the freezer top was still rusted and falling apart. There were also flies in the kitchen - mainly on two dirty dish rags lying on the counter.
Matt told us someone forgot to throw the rags away the night before. We also noticed the flies were coming in through the back door - which was wide open.

Matt shrugged his shoulders and told us, "I mean, it's good food."

The owner, Mike arrived shortly after our tour of the kitchen and told us he got a 'clean plate' award two years ago. He says he is making fixes as fast as he can - including making sure the meat is kept at the right temperature in the pit.

He told us, "Ma'am, it was the holiday and we've been trying to work on all of these things to get them fixed." He went on to say, "That's all we can say ma'am we try to do our best thank you very much."

Here are the other restaurants at the top of the list this week for violations.

Beech Street Grill and Fish Market in Fernandina Beach had 12 critical violations including:
An employee making food without washing his hands after talking on his cell phone

At Fusion Bistro in Jacksonville on San Jose Boulevard there were 10 critical violations including:
Live roaches and dead ones were found in the crunchy noodles
