Jacksonville, Fla - We stopped by the Golden Corral on Merrill road in Jacksonville to see the kitchen this week. When we arrived there was already a busy lunch crowd eating. The restaurant received more than a dozen critical violations from the state inspector. The manager greeted us right when we walked in. We immediately asked him about the critical violations listed in the report, "Your customers are going to want to know why your employees aren't washing their hands."

He told us we were not allowed inside the kitchen and then asked us to wait a moment while he called the corporate office.

Golden Corral had 21 violations, 16 of them were critical:

POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS FOOD NOT AT THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE ON THE BUFFET
EMPLOYEES TOUCHING BODY PARTS AND THEN MAKING FOOD WITHOUT WASHING HANDS
AND NO HAND SOAP AT THE HANDWASH SINK

When the manager came back to see us we told him we wanted to see inside the kitchen. He replied, "I have no comment." We again asked him about his employees not washing their hands before handling food. He responded by pointing at a piece of paper, "It has the number you need to call." We asked one last time to see inside the kitchen. "No ma'am" he replied. We asked, "Why? Is it because it isn't clean?" The manager said, "I'm sorry ma'am" and then shut the door to his office.

First Wok in Middleburg also received 21 violations with 16 of them critical including:

FLIES EVERYWHERE ON THE EGG ROLLS
A LOT OF LIVE FLIES IN THE KITCHEN
AND EMPLOYEES TOUCHING FOOD WITH THEIR BARE HANDS AND NOT WASHING HANDS

The Peking Chinsese Restaurant in Saint Augustine had 26 violations, 17 of them critical including:

EMPLOYEE HANDLING RAW EGGS THEN TOUCHING OTHER FOOD WITHOUT WASHING HANDS
NO PROOF OF TRAINING FOR WORKERS
AND EMPLOYEES EATING FOOD IN THE PREP AREA

Congrats to our clean plate award winners of the week! All of these restaurants received perfect inspections:

Shake's Frozen Custard (Orange Park)
ARS Regency Inn (Jax)
Holiday Inn Express (Jax)
Hampton Inn (Jax)

In other states I've visited, the state report is published at the front of the restaurant for everyone to see before dinning there.

Yeah, "good work, ch47". Right. About as much work as reading from a teleprompter. Investigative reporting? More like reading what you're handed.

I believe Violet works at Golden Corral. Why would anyone defend these people that handle our food? No matter what the tactics used by the media if it results in our food being prepared by clean hands and in a clean restaurant its worth it!!!!! I am never a fan of the media making the news but this is a public service thats appreciated/ Good work CH47!!!!

Violet, the point is Sure we can all check the facts on paper right? And the public record can say "clean as a whistle" But most of us look at the investigation of the news as surprise inspections. I worked in a kitchen before and I know we were told ahead of time when the inspections would come so we would of course clean and do everything right. How would you feel if I prepared your food after scratching my sweaty nutz? Nasty right? I was in walmart the other day using the urinal and the eye doctor used one next to me and didnt wash his hands!!! I dont know about you but I wouldn't want that doctor examining my eye and that goes along with my food. Well Im with the the news on this one. Its great reporting. It should never be a problem in the first place IF the restaurant did what it is suppose to day in and day out.

Just wondering how CH47 would feel if I came to the door with a camera crew and "demanded" to be let into the news room to poke around to see how folks are doing their jobs. No, I'm not really. They'd never allow it. BUT the eateries being attacked HAVE to let Tara the Terrible into their kitchens, or they're witholding information. Nice double standard folks. Just stop claiming the investigations are done by you and your staff when they're not.

Again, Demetri (and anyone else who takes the media at their word), check the facts. Health inspections are public record. If you're concerned about sanitation, as we all should be, get the real story, not the inaccurate, sensationalized media version. :)

Thank You Tara for your EXCELLENT reporting. The people here leaving comments about jobs, economy, blah blah blah may be fine with eating food with flies, maggots, etc,on it or having employees touch their sweaty butt then prepare food for consumers to eat. Where I'm from that is disgusting. This is the best way to catch them off guard, when they know you guys aren't coming. Thank you again!!!! I believe in true customer service from these restaurants. Treat it with pride, Have integrity, treat it as if you're going to feed your own family.Restaurants wouldn't have to worry about the public knowing if they were doing what is right in the first place. Great work Tara!!!!!! Thank you!!!

Talk about inaccurate reporting! What a coincidence that Golden Corral and First Wok have exactly the same number of total and critical violations. Hmmm, this reporter might need to brush up on her fact checking skills. Golden Corral had neither 21 total violations nor 16 critical. What exactly is this woman's agenda? And does she realize that she puts people's jobs on the line with her little games?

I Agree with viejo, this ain't nothing but trying to Fu$# economy more than what already is, how can she compare Full service Restaurants to the so calles CLEAN PLATE AWARD Restaurants only being either smaller restaurants or fast food, come on let the Good Full Service Restaurants alone, if the customers want to know how clean is the place the are dinning at, all they need to do is ask for the Report to the Manager in turn, that is a Public document that anyone can access, all you guys are doing is putting the names or "bad" Restaurants out, and hurting the economy more.
