Jacksonville, FLA. - Masala Indian Cuisine is located on San Jose Boulevard in the Mandarin Outback Shopping Center. It opened in 2009. On the day we went by during lunch time - the restaurant was closed. We wanted to ask the owner about an emergency order issued 4 days earlier to temporarily shut the place down.

The state health inspector found more than 50 dead roaches all over the kitchen floor. During his visit, the inspector noted he saw the restaurant owner trying to vacuum up the dead roaches. The report states almost 30 live roaches were seen crawling around the kitchen.

The inspector also noted holes in the wall throughout the restaurant.

In March of 2010 this same location was closed down temporarily for more than one hundred live and dead roaches.

State records show the business is registered to Susmitha R. Kudumula. We've tried reaching out to Kudumula but so far we have not received a response.

On 01/22/13 we talked to the restaurant owner via email and on the phone. He gave us this response:

Hi, I am the owner of the Masala Indian Cuisine, located in Mandarin. After temporarily closing the restaurant on Friday afternoon, we cleaned up the restaurant with the help of pest control people thoroughly. I have regular pest control. The health inspector came Saturday Morning around 9:30 am and inspected the restaurant and conveyed that the Restaurant met the business inspection standards during that visit in writing. So we opened the restaurant for regular business Saturday. We just to want to convey and clear up the air that our restaurant is not closed permanently. Also, What ever you reported in the news was not completely true and there was only one hole behind the mop sink only and was not visible. We are very Authentic Indian restaurant doing business and serving Mandarin community with lot of respect. This incident will not happen in future.
