JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Being a bell ringer for the Salvation Army this year took on a whole new meaning for Mary Johnson.
"I believe in putting others first so I really felt that I was getting more out of it than they were," said Johnson.
At 102 years-old, she is the oldest resident at the retirement community of Riverside Presbyterian Apartments to volunteer as a bell ringer for the holidays.
It's the first year residents here are taking on the task to raise money for the organization. According to the event organizer, it was a task Johnson signed up for without hesitation.
"Ms. Johnson was really the first person that I asked, so it was fun from there on," said the organizer of the event, Di Tyree.
According to Johnson, it was an opportunity for her to make a difference.
"I was able to help other people that couldn't help themselves," said Johnson.
The residents and staff members at Riverside Presbyterian Apartments logged more than 65 hours of bell ringing this year. The event was so popular, it may even become a tradition at the retirement community.
"I think even starting a little bit earlier next year and probably having twice as many people," said Tyree.
Johnson will turn 103 in August of next year and she's already looking forward to ringing the bell again.
"Well if they ask, I'll be glad to do it" said Johnson.
One resident of the retirement community dedicated 11 hours of service.
