ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla.-- Garrett Jones had his whole life ahead of him. The 13-year-old enjoyed fishing, hunting, and studying marine biology. When neighbors in Treasure Beach heard of his death, they were stunned.
"He rode around on his bike, and his sister walked the dog around back and forth. It's so sad for them. It really, truly is," Charlie Novak said.
Garrett died after a car crash near Folkston, Ga. He was returning home from a trip to visit a sick grandparent.
Novak says he'll never forget how honest Garrett was.
"One time, we were expecting a check coming to the house and he delivered it because the mailman delivered it to the wrong place," he continued.
Family tells us Garrett was as smart as a whip and a part of the International Baccalaureate Honors Program. He played football, but was called a gentle giant because of his smile and sweet demeanor.
As family and friends mourn the loss, they say they'll try to remember the good times.
"Brilliant kid. Shame all the good ones go."
A memorial service will be held Saturday at St. Anastasia Catholic Church at 10 a.m.
