MACCLENNY, Fla. -- Two children are in the hospital after being hit by a car on their way to summer school. The call came in just before 730 Monday morning that the pair were struck on State Road 121, just past Lowder Street in McClenney.
Baker County Sheriff Joey Dobson says the kids were headed to summer school at Baker County Middle School. That's when police say they darted into the road - right into traffic.
"It's not an area where pedestrians should cross," said Florida Highway Patrol Lieutenant Bill Leeper. "It's not at a cross walk."
Lieutenant Leeper says both kids were hit by a 29 year old corrections officer, driving a Ford Focus.
According to Sheriff Dobson, one child was a 7 year old boy. The other a 13 year old girl. Lieutenant Leeper says she suffered a broken leg. The boy's injuries are more serious.
"He had very critical injuries. He was air lifted to [UF and] Shands [Hospital]. We are waiting on his condition," Lieutenant Leeper said.
FHP is now investigating to determine if any charges will be filed against the driver.
"As you can imagine something happened like that, it will shake you up," said Lieutenant Leeper. "We are still trying to determine if she had any part to play as far as any speed or reckless driving."
Officials at Baker County Middle School confirm the boy and girl are siblings.
