ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A local family is holding onto hope after a freak accident left a 2-year-old girl fighting for her life.
"I'm just hoping for everyone to keep her in their prayers," said the girl's uncle Thomas O'Sickey.
Dixie Wallace nearly drowned in her grandmother's pond. The family said one minute she was playing in the house and the next she was gone.
"Everyone started looking for her and I noticed something floating in the water in the backyard. I noticed it was her, so I jumped right in and pulled her out," said O'Sickey.
O'Sickey said she must have wandered off to follow the family cat outside and somehow fell in to the pond. He showed Action News exactly where it happened and even measured the depth of the pond for us. "That's about waist-deep right there," he said.
There's a drop-off where he said the water had come up to his neck, and that's where he found her.
St. Johns County Fire Rescue told Action News CPR was performed on Dixie before she was taken to Flagler Hospital.
"Right now this is just a terrible accident. We will cross our T's and dot our I's for a thorough investigation," said Kevin Kelshaw with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
Action News also reached out to the Department of Children and Families. The spokesman told us they are actively investigating this incident alongside police.
