JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- 20-20 vision is now a thing of the past.

Local eye doctor Arun Gulani is now performing surgeries on patients with 20-20 vision to make their vision even better.

"Research has proven we could see 20-10," said Dr. Gulani.

That's what Gulani is trying to accomplish.

"The biggest problem why most people do not reach their full potential is because most patients are getting 'cookie-cutter' Lasik," said Gulani.

John Townsend from Alaska says he had Lasik surgery previously.

But he says his right eye started to become blurry, and two eye surgeons turned him away.

Townsend says he found a new option by researching online, an option that brought him across the country to Jacksonville.

"He said not only can I help you, but I can help you get beyond 20-20," said Townsend.

Townsend says his flight took longer than his latest Lasik surgery.

Action News was there for the surgery.

Doctors finished the procedure in just three minutes.

Dr. Gulani says the risks associated with this surgery are very low.

In fact, studies show contact wearers have a higher chance of infection than Lasik patients.

My experience is not all doctors are the same. Some will not take any risk at, all to help a patient. While others with vast experience will sometimes take the risk to help you. My dad a few years ago had some Dr's who refused to the do surgery because of the risk. Instead insisting on procedure that would not fix his broken leg and would have 30 percent chance of killing him before they would clear him for leg surgery. Let me stress that 30 percent chance of death before they would do the surgery to fix his broken leg. Another Dr with experience in such surgeries took the case and my dad was able to walk for the last few years of his life thanks to that Dr taking the risk that others would not. Each Dr skill and experience is different.

I had LASIK surgery about 3 months ago, and I am happy with the results and have no complications. Although I do still have some night vision issues like halos and starbursts, that will hopefully go away in the next few months, and its not horrible, I still see very good at night and perfect 20/10 during the day. (I wore -4.5 contacts before... so I was pretty blind). Having said all that, I was extremely nervous and I am glad I have no issues... but as the years go on, I am not so sure I would take the risk again and have another surgery to "enhance" my vision if it gets worse in the future. It is true that you are 10 times more likely to get infection from contacts then you are from lasik (probably those antibiotic eye drops) there is a lot of other cornea problems that could happen. If a doctor you trust says "you are no a candidate" for lasik, and they turn you away... then another says the same thing.... then you fly across the country to find someone that will.... you are taking a serious gamble with your vision. People who make money by slicing eyes open say it's too risky for a medical reason (thin cornea, most likely) means that you are at very high risk for complications. The LASIK risk is very low for people who are good candidates and use good doctors. But the risk goes up a lot with lousy doctors or with patients that should not have had LASIK to begin with. And to take the risk of slicing open your eye (the flap NEVER completely heals) just to achieve eagle-eye vision when it was already good.... thats just stupid.
