JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Call it malicious or just downright forgetful, but according to the Transportation Security Administration, each year more people are bringing loaded guns to the airport.

"You never know, maybe the guy next to you might have a gun or something," said traveler Siggy Buckley.

At Jacksonville International Airport, the TSA and airport police work together to keep guns off planes, so how are they doing? Action News requested yearly totals from the TSA that show increasing numbers. In 2011, only nine guns were confiscated. In 2012, that number doubled to 18. So far this year, 30 guns have been brought all the way to the checkpoint, one of them was found Monday in a traveler's carry-on bag.

"I wouldn't want to be traveling with any guns or weapons. That's pretty scary," said traveler Corey Bain.

It's a startling number, even for local gun owners like Richard Baggett who says it's never even crossed his mind to bring his firearm to the airport.

"I wouldn't think people would be traveling in and out of airports with guns anyways, with regulations the way they are and laws. I don't know maybe people aren't listening," said Baggett.

We asked the TSA why we are seeing so many. They tell us, most of the time, travelers just forget the weapons are in their bags. Depending on the situation, the TSA has the right to impose a civil penalty and a fine up to $11,000, a pretty expensive mistake to make during the holidays.

The TSA also said they've seen increasing amounts of ammunition being confiscating at the airport.
