JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A longtime employee of the Police Academy took her own life at FSCJ on North Friday afternoon.
It was an emotional day for the Sheriff's Office.
"It's almost really a family member of JSO," said JSO Director Tom Hackney.
A secretary who had been with the academy for 30 years took a personal gun from a recruit's purse while on their way to lunch. Police say there was nothing the recruit could do to stop her. The woman took her own life.
"That woman asked her 'what are you doing, why are you doing this?' She then turned around, placed a handgun to her head and pulled the trigger," said Hackney.
Police say 80-year-old Phyllis Jean Frank of St. Augustine was set to retire at the end of the year. It's a tragic end for a beloved veteran with the force.
"She's a fixture," said Hackney. "She's always been there. She's always around and you become accustomed to seeing her and the things that she says and the smile she gives you and the smile you give back."
Police are working to notify the woman's family who lives out of town.
