ATLANTA (AP) -- AT&T has announced it will create about 600 new jobs in Georgia and plans to hire workers to fill more than 1,000 positions overall.

Gov. Nathan Deal announced Thursday that AT&T plans to immediately hire full and part-time workers in network construction and maintenance, customer support, retail and other positions.

Deal says many of the positions are the result of Project Velocity IP - a multibillion dollar investment to expand and enhance its national wireless and wired internet protocol networks.

Among other things, the expansion calls for the company to grow its 4G network to cover more than 300 million people by the end of 2014 and expand service to more than 1 million businesses by the end of 2015.

AT&T employs more than 21,000 people in Georgia.
