JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Action News has learned the alleged mastermind in the veterans charity scandal is still allowed to practice law while facing the charges.
Kelly Mathis is charged with money laundering in an alleged illegal gambling ring involving Internet cafes around the state.
Unlike many other jobs where someone might be suspended during the investigation, the Florida bar says its waiting on the outcome of the investigation.
The Jacksonville bar president says there are a different set of rules when lawyers are accused of crimes.
"They go through due process before they're license is suspended or revoked," said Ray Driver, President of the Jacksonville Bar Association.
The Florida Bar couldn't tell us how long the investigation would take, only that a file was opened after they heard about the charges. Mathis is out on bond.
