JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The accused mastermind of the Veterans Charity scandal will spend six years in prison.

Jacksonville attorney Kelly Mathis received the sentence Wednesday after a Florida judge listened to character witnesses describe the lawyer as a man of integrity who loved his family.

Mathis' attorneys argued that he should be spared prison given he only provided legal advice to Allied Veterans of America.

A jury convicted Kelly Mathis last October on 103 of 104 counts he faced.

Action News first broke the news of the investigation into the illegal gambling ring last March, leading to the arrests of 57 people, the closings of Internet cafes, and a new law banning certain "gaming centers" across Florida.

Former Fraternal Order of Police President Nelson Cuba, Vice President Robbie Frietas, and Allied Veterans of the World Commander Jerry Bass were among those arrested.

Jennifer Carroll resigned as Florida's Lieutenant Governor. She once represented Allied Veterans of the World, a charity that housed homeless vets. Her ties came under fire when she proposed a bill benefitting Internet cafes.

Last December, the Florida Bar suspended Mathis from practicing law.

He will remain free on bond pending appeals.
