Great Idea! Not sure about splitting up an engine company however. After working as a career firefighter that ran 3 man engines, 2 man trucks, 2 man ambulances and also working on ambulances in the countries rated most dangerous city I can see both sides. It boils down to job security and cost efficiency. Job security if the engines response numbers are high, cost efficiency with lower fuel costs, maintenance costs on engines and less staffing in areas with very low fire call volume. Ambulances staffed with 2 personnel can handle majority of all medical calls, the exceptions would be cardiac arrests, major traumas and maybe a few others. Why send an engine to a medical call when an ambulance might get to the call first, same time or within a few minutes after an engine arrives?
