JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A high school honors english teacher has been arrested on charges of having a sexual relationship with a minor.
Police arrested Danielle Elizabeth Reed, 23, on two counts of sexual battery on a victim over 12 and under 18.
Reed has only been teaching English at Atlantic Coast High for 15 months. Now, her days may be numbered after police say she was having a sexual relationship with a student.
"That's really messed up, and I don't think it should have happened," said 12th-grader Nicole Gabriel. "But that's the world we live in I guess."
According to the police report, Reed had sex on multiple occasions with a student at her school. And word traveled fast down the halls Monday.
"I thought it was like a joke because it's kind of weird thinking about it at first with one of our own teachers," said 11th-grader Shelby Davis.
11th-grader Jordan Hartsfield was also caught off guard.
"You meet these people and you wouldn't really think twice about something like this happening in your school and then it happens and you realize it happens so much," he said.
The report says Reed even showed up at the student's house. The victim told police Reed posed as the mother of a fake friend picking the teen up for a sleepover. The victim's mom bought it and allowed her child to go. Now other parents picking kids up from school Monday were disgusted.
"It's terrible," said Karen Aspler. "I don't understand what's going on with these teachers lately and the students themselves."
The kids we talked with say if it's true, she should never be allowed back in a classroom.
Police say the victim came forward to police last week. The victim told police the relationship took place between March and June of 2012. Investigators say the victim's mother found out about the affair a month ago.
Schools Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti released a statement saying:
"I am deeply troubled by the allegations of sexual misconduct by a teacher," said Dr. Vitti. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the alleged victim. This behavior is not representative of the more than 8,000 teachers in our classrooms who are positive role models for our students. The district is establishing a position in the Office of Professional Standards that will enhance the district's implementation of employee disciplinary guidelines and procedures, and institute additional training for employees," added Dr. Vitti.
The superintendent is recommending Reed be suspended without pay pending termination at the School Board meeting on December 4.
Reed is due in court on December 3.
