BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- The teenager who killed a Brunswick baby will never know freedom again.

A judge sentenced De'Marquise Elkins, 18, to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

It was the maximum punishment he could receive for shooting 13-month-old Antonio Santiago between the eyes while trying to rob the baby's mother back in March.

At Thursday's hearing, the mom, Sherry West, briefly took the stand to read a poem about how much she misses her little boy.

West said, "His first word was never heard. His first sentence was never said. He never got to sleep in a toddler bed."

Elkins' attorneys argued that life without parole, for a teenager, amounts to death.

Public defender Kevin Gough said, "Life without parole for a juvenile is cruel and unusual punishment."

Gough plans to appeal.

Elkins' accused accomplice, 15-year-old Dominique Lang, is still awaiting trial.

His mother, Karimah Elkins, was tried at the same time as her son. While the same jury found her not guilty of making false statements to police, they did find her guilty of evidence tampering.

She tried to cover up her son's crime by throwing the gun he used in a saltwater pond.

She is still awaiting sentencing. She faces 10 years in prison.

This thing is nothing but weak and evil not to mention as stupid as anything comes. You can look at it and tell theres nothing in there. He got off better than Antonio, if it was up to me he would be tortured to death over a 5-10 year period... as slow and painful as possible. This has to be one of the WORST things that has EVER happended ANYWHERE at ANYTIME. Burn in hell when you get back demon...

I would'nt insult animals by putting him in thier catagory. Animals get put down when they attack, not locked up for life. Eye for a eye, and life for a life. He deserved the death penalty.

If they are going to cage this animal for the rest of its life, then it should be in a zoo where animals like this belong. Now I hope the court puts the rest of its low life family in prison for their failed attempt to cover up the crime.

So now we have to support the scumbag for the rest of his life. That's not justice. He should have been given the death penalty.

If he did the crime which he did as his accomplice turned evidence on him he should be put to death. Taking the life of a baby is especially heinous and should be charged with special circumstances hate crime.
