VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WFTV) -- Beach patrol officials said a man from Georgia drowned while swimming in the ocean in Ormond Beach on Saturday.

Strong rip currents were to blame for the man's drowning, officials said. The incident happened shortly after noon on the beach near Cardinal Drive.

Witnesses said the man was pulled from the water and emergency crews were doing CPR on him before he was rushed to a nearby hospital.

The 30-year-old victim's name wasn't released. Officials said he is from Georgia.

Nearly 50 people had to be rescued from strong rip currents along Volusia County beaches on Saturday, according to beach patrol.

The National Weather Service said a high risk for rip currents remains in place through Sunday and advises swimmers to pay attention to flags and posted signs.
