JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- From 1970-1990, the USS Charles F. Adams welcomed tourists, greeted veterans and reminded everyone of the Navy's presence in the River City.
Dan Bean is determined to bring back those days.
"It's got a great history. There's thousands of people that live in the Jacksonville area that actually served and worked on the Adams," he explained.
Bean has been head of the grassroots group Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association for two years. He says the retired USS Adams would be a great attraction for downtown. The plan is to dock it on the Northbank...directly across the street from the Maxwell House plant.
Like most things, though, it all comes down to dollars and cents.
"We're down to the last million and a half dollars, is what we need. We've raised over a half-million dollars," he continued.
More than 30 cities across the country have profited from Navy vessels. Take Norfolk and the USS Wisconsin, Boston and the USS Constitution, San Diego and the USS Midway -- and the latest -- Los Angeles and the USS Iowa.
Natives to Jacksonville say it's our time to get on board.
"It is necessary to plant seeds. We all invest a little bit and it will multiply itself coming back," Bill Ali said.
Bean says Mayor Brown and the city pledged their support to the ship. It's estimated to have an annual economic impact of $4 million and bring in at least 150,000 people.
"We think it's a very low-risk proposition. Bring it in. If it doesn't work, tow it out. You've already paid for it," he said.
The project is being funded by sponsors and private donations, so no burden falls on the taxpayers.
