Boatswain: Bounty captain asked what went wrong

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - The boatswain aboard the HMS Bounty says the ship's captain gathered the crew before the ship sank during Hurricane Sandy to ask exactly what went wrong.

One member of the 18th-century replica ship's crew died and the captain was never found after the ship sank 90 miles off Cape Hatteras, N.C., during the October storm.

Laura Groves testified Friday before a federal safety panel in Virginia that Capt. Robin Walbridge held a brainstorming session to determine how the ship got to the point it would need to be abandoned. Groves says nobody had a good answer.

The ship was taking on water, had a rotted frame and sailed directly into the path of the storm. The crew was thrown into the water moments after Walbridge gave the order to abandon ship.
