SATSUMA, Fla. -- Police combed through heavy woods late into the night Tuesday, looking for clues after two men stumbled upon a gruesome scene.
Thy called 911 moments after locating a badly decomposed body while riding four-wheelers in the Hoot Owl Ridge neighborhood in Satsuma.
Police confirmed the remains belong to a person, but not a child, calming fears that they belong to Haliegh Cummings, who disappeared from Satsuma in 2009 at the age of 5.
"We're not sure if it is a male or female but it is clearly a set of adult human remains," said Captain Homer Deloach, PIO for the Putnam County Sheriffs Office.
Deloach tells Action News the Putnam County Sheriff's Office is, so far, unable to tie the remains to any active missing persons cases locally, so they called in detectives from surrounding counties to investigate as well.
"We offered for them to come down and take a look at the remains and the scene to see if there are any similarities with any of their missing persons cases and Jso took us up on that offer."
Deloach would not speculate how long the body was in the wooded area, or confirm what items were found with it. The Putnam County Medical Examiners office is now examining the remains.
