JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Geniesha Thomas is counting her blessings tonight. Her 5-year-old son, Joshua Griffin, did something few people do. He survived a gunshot to the head.
"My son was sitting on the sofa, and we were laughing, and he was watching TV. And next thing we heard was a big pop. We just seen glass shatter everywhere, so we fell to the floor," she said.
Tuesday night, police say someone fired a single shot into Thomas's aunt's house on the corner of Danville and Portsmouth Avenues. Little Joshua was the only one hit. Fortunately, it was only a flesh wound.
"Bullet fragments in his head that just penetrated his skin," said Thomas.
Right now, police don't know if the shooting was an accident. Investigators spent Wednesday scouring the neighborhood, trying to see if neighbors would lead them to a gunman. So far, no luck.
"I'm angry at the fact that there is somebody who actually wanted to kill another human being, because to me it was intentional," said Thomas. "Police say someone had to walk up and aim it at the window."
The crime fighting group, Mad Dads, is joining the search, urging neighbors to come forward. "It's something that the community simply cannot tolerate. We've got to take a stand," said Mad Dads President, Donald Foy. "They need to be removed from the streets of Jacksonville."
Until the shooter is found, the family is staying away from the house, and hugging Joshua a little tighter. Action News asked Thomas if she realized how lucky she is. She didn't hesitate to say, "Yes I know how blessed we are, yes ma'am. I know he had an angel watching over him."
