ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The Bridge of Lions will close Tuesday night so crews can install a test pattern of new lights.

The City of St. Augustine released new renderings for planned improvements to the landmark. Leaders say they need about $200,000 to finish the project. The idea was sparked seven years ago. One local company agreed to do the work, but had to back out because of the cost.

Crews will close one lane beginning at 9 p.m. Traffic will alternate across the bridge throughout the night. Marine traffic is not scheduled to be affected. The work is expected to be completed by 6 a.m. City leaders want to turn on a dozen lights for the Fourth of July.

cty of st. aug. leaders send the wrong message to thousands of young citizens & visitors alike year after year.. and now this as well !!with the nights of lights each holiday season, they send sublimal messages to impressionable children, that it's all right to waste electricity !!! and doing lights on the states bridge to further pimp the bridge, only serves to re ienforce the wasteful notion... the message the city should be sending is with pictures, and about how it was & that they are fiscally & enviromentally sensitive, to the cost of burning all these lights, simply to light up their town like a gawdy Italian picnic/wedding
