JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- British Airways announced Friday it will close its call center in Jacksonville by the end of December.

The airline said the move is based "purely on costs," according to a written statement from the company.

The decision will impact more than 250 jobs.

"Following a global review of our call center operations the decision has been taken to close Flytele, our call center in Jacksonville by the end of December 2013. This decision has not been taken lightly and comes as part of our drive to ensure our customers receive the best possible service at the right level of cost, operational effectiveness and flexibility," wrote the company in a statement.

British Airways said the lease for the call center on Belfort Road is up, and that operational costs are significantly higher than other call centers.
