BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- Twenty-one kids and counting. That's how many young people police say have gotten sick off the synthetic drug known as "Spice."

It's sold as herbal incense, in packages labeled "not for human consumption." But that's not stopping young people in Brunswick from smoking it and getting violently ill from it. That spike in sicknesses prompted a series of raids Tuesday.

Charles Brockman witnessed the raid at a duplex on Fourth Avenue.

"They had the haz-mat tent set up over there in somebody's yard. Fire trucks, police everywhere," Brockman said.

Police say they found equipment there used to make synthetic substances. Two people were arrested.

Two more people were arrested at Mary Jane's Emporium, a store Action News visited just last week while trying to find out where kids are buying this stuff. A clerk refused to talk to us.

Brockman said, "From what I heard, it eats holes in your brain. And makes your spinal cord bleed. I mean, it's not good stuff at all."

He said he's not surprised kids like it. They think it's synthetic marijuana.

Chief Matt Doering with the Glynn County Police Department said, "It is not synthetic marijuana. It is not. It's a synthetic drug."

He said the high is much different and much more dangerous. And because police can't simply look at the package and see that it's illegal, it's much harder to control.

Investigators need your help to stay ahead of the problem. Anyone with information about the illegal distribution of synthetic drugs can give an anonymous tip by calling Glynn County's Silent Witness Hotline at 912-264-1333.
