Brunswick airport construction to cause flight delays
BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- The Brunswick Golden Isles Airport is about to undergo one of the largest projects in its history.
The Airport Commission will be receiving some $11.06 million from the federal government to help in renovating the 8,001-foot runway.
The runway was originally built to serve U.S. Naval Air Station Glynco in 1952 and was rehabilitated in 1993.
Airport Commissioners say during construction, the runway will have overnight and weekend closures that might impact some Delta Connection flights.
The total cost of the project is expected to run about $12.3 million.
The Georgia Department of Transportation and the Airport Commission are expected to pay for the costs that the federal grant does not.
Construction is supposed to wrap up sometime in early 2014.
