BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- A hometown hero dog has been named America's top service dog at the 2013 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards.
More than 1 million votes were cast by Americans from coast to coast choosing service dog Bronx, a resident of Brunswick, Georgia, and top dogs in seven other categories.
SD Bronx is the loving companion and service dog to Christopher, a 14-year-old boy who suffers from chronic health conditions. From the age of 9, Christopher spent most of his childhood in and out of the hospital due to unexplainable seizures.
Bronx can detect when Christopher is having a seizure and is trained to alert people for help. When Christopher lost half his field of vision, he posed as a sight cane and guided Christopher everywhere he went.
Each dog honored was also awarded $1,500 for a selected charity partner. Bronx's charity partner is Texas Hearing and Service Dogs.
