BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- After five months since 13-month-old Antonio Santiago was shot during an attempted robbery, one of his accused killers was found guilty.

Many people expressed a sense of relief after the verdict came in.

Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering had been following the trial very closely, getting daily briefings from an investigator inside the courtroom.

"The truth is here that they're guilty. We wouldn't have put them in jail if they weren't," said Doering.

The toddler's slaying in broad daylight shook the small coastal town and catapulted it into the spotlight.

Many people declined to be interviewed on camera but told Action News they were glad the trial is over.

One woman said since the murder she still fears for her safety and that of her three children.

"It'll never be the same. There is no trust. Everyone is already scared. People are scared to walk outside and check their mailbox," said resident Tunisia Towns.

But others say life in Brunswick is back to normal.

According to Doering, his department is ready to handle any kind of reaction to the verdict.

"I'm very confident in the city in the county, I'm very confident that no matter what this is that people will come together for the common good," said Doering.

Now that the verdict is in, Towns hopes there will be peace.

"I want to see unity. I want to see us come together to help each other and to build each other up instead of tearing ourselves down," said Towns.

The other teen suspect in the case, Dominique Lang, is still awaiting trial.
