ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Was it suicide or something more sinister?

It's a question that's being asked again, 3 ½ years after investigators say Michelle O'Connell took her boyfriend's police-issued handgun and shot herself with it.

Commander Chuck Mulligan, with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, confirmed Thursday that CNN is now looking into the case.

"They appeared to want to hear everything about this case," he said.

In the beginning, O'Connell's family refused to believe it was suicide and questioned whether her boyfriend, Jeremy Banks, may have had something to do with her death.

Banks was then, and is now, a sheriff's deputy in St. Johns County.  After several investigations by local and state agencies, Banks was never arrested and never charged with a crime.

In a November 2013 interview with Action News, Sheriff David Shoar said, "If I had one doubt that it was anything other than a suicide, I'd be investigating right now."

He admitted mistakes were made during the initial investigation.  But he said those mistakes didn't change the fact that O'Connell took her own life.

Now, CNN is taking a new look.  And the Sheriff's Office welcomes it.

Cmdr. Mulligan said, "We've been really forthright and upfront with giving information with regards to this case."

Sheriff Shoar has welcomed skeptics to look at the case for themselves.  Details and documents are posted here

This deputy is a coward and a murderer. She ran to bedroom to get away from him an she locked the door, he kicked down the door an murdered her. The texts sent toher sister were from a girl that knew her abusive bf may kill her an he did. Why would someone kill themselves because she is leaving an abusive bf. Common ssense he's a murderer an has gotten away with it.
