Cancelations at JIA from Winter Storm

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It's unusual to see so few jets at the gate on a Wednesday night. A Southeastern storm has frozen air travel across the country and at Jacksonville International Airport. Eighteen flights were canceled, leaving JIA's terminal looking bare.

"They've been dealing with flight delays all day long," said Charles Closmann.

Closmann is one of the few people we found waiting. He had no idea if his passenger would even make it into Jacksonville Wednesday night.

"They started in the West Coast in California, stopped in Chicago and probably had about three hours worth of delays in Chicago and a couple hours worth of delays in Atlanta," said Closmann.

Even travelers coming from much warmer conditions like Miami couldn't catch a break.

"We went into the plan and was supposed to kick off and they said maintenance was coming," said Myriam Georges.

The 30-minute delay wasn't too bad. What was bad was the cold slap in the face when she landed.
Action News went straight to the airport's operations manager to ask what would happen if ice settled on the tarmac.

"We do not have infrastructure in place. Snow removal machines or ice removal like salt and sand, we don't stockpile that here but we don't anticipate that would be a problem," said Chris Styles.

Again, JIA isn't expecting any disruptions in operations, but suggests travelers check their airlines for possible delays.
