JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- It's hard to watch, and it's caught on camera.
A 25-year-old man was hit by a car February 4th, while crossing A1A in Jacksonville Beach.
JTA cameras show a man get off a city bus, walk around the back of it, take a quick glance to the right, then bolt into the path of an oncoming car. He was critically hurt.
"It was a gruesome scene. He had multiple injuries to his head, his neck, his legs," said Sgt. Thom Bingham with the Jacksonville Beach Police Department.
The video also shows something rescuers like to see, witnesses getting out to help. "In this video, you see the driver gets out immediately and starts to give first aid. Other drivers on the opposite side of the median stop immediately and come over to help. And it was great to see that these people pulled together to help this guy survive," said Sgt. Bingham.
Police say their actions probably saved the man's life. But more than anything, the accident serves as a reminder to the hundreds of people who walk at the beach everyday. "You gotta watch where you're going. Don't try to beat traffic. Don't try to be in a rush," Sgt. Bingham said.
Jacksonville is the fourth most dangerous city in America for pedestrians. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 31 pedestrians died on Jacksonville streets last year.
The victim in this crash got lucky. After spending weeks at Shands Jacksonville, police tell us he's now recovering at Brooks Rehab Center.
