Jacksonville, Fla -- Police are investigating after a child was hit by a car at a local apartment complex. The accident happened Saturday night at the Canopy Apartments, 653 Monument Road. It happened around 8:30 Saturday night.

Police say the 5-year-old child was hit in the parking lot of the complex. The driver of the black Honda was leaving the apartment complex when he hit the boy with the front of his vehicle. A detective on scene told Action News that the boy was dragged underneath the vehicle for a short time before someone alerted the driver to stop.

The child was transported to Shands Jacksonville in life-threatening condition.

Police say the driver is cooperating with the investigation. No charges have been filed.
