POINCIANA, Fla. -- Several children were injured when the private school van they were riding in crashed into a pickup truck in Osceola County on Friday.

The crash happened shortly after 3 p.m. at the intersection of Reaves and Pleasant Hill roads in the Poinciana area.

In all, 13 people, including nine children, were injured in the crash.

Channel 9 has confirmed the van is part of an after-school program, but it's unclear with what school it was associated.
One of the child victims was flown to Arnold Palmer Hospital with undisclosed injuries. The others were taken by ambulance to Osceola Regional Hospital and Florida Hospital.

None of the victims' names or conditions has been released.

Video from Skywitness 9 HD shows the truck was towing a trailer that appeared to be full of oranges. Video shows the entire front of the truck smashed in.

I ask you all to remember this accident when your Federal and State Representatives come up for re-election. They support ALL busses to have mandatory seat belts BUT, NOT FOR SCHOOL BUSES. They contend it is too expensive and the children are safe in buses without seatbelts. I think they got it backwards. They need to be protecting our children, FIRST. School buses have fewer stops and make more direction changes than any city or commercial bus. City buses normally make too many frequent stops and few direction changes on each route. Requiring seatbelts on city buses is an outright scam on the public. There are a few bus drivers who may need their license suspended for speeding down narrow 30 MPH posted streets but, they will have a day when they will lose all they have in an accident they cause.
