JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- Action News has learned the money made from major sporting events is being called into question.

Councilman Matt Schellenberg says the questions started after they found the city lost $700 thousand dollars on the Navy-Marine Corp Classic. It was a nationally televised game that didn't make it past half time. Schellenberg says now they're investigating other big events like Florida-Georgia and the Florida-Florida state baseball game.

The problem was money to pay the bills came from funds other than that for sports and entertainment. But the revenue was always put in the sports fund. So money was just being moved around between accounts. We asked if the city could've been losing money all along. "It's very possible we've not made money at all on events," said Schellenberg.

It's an even bigger concern for Schellenberg, since the mayor wants to do another basketball game on a carrier again this year. "I guess we are behind the eight ball," said Schellenberg.

While the mayors office says they're still in talks to host another event, Schellenberg says taxpayers need just one answer. "Are we willing as a city to bring people in but possibly lose money," said Schellenberg.

A spokesman for the mayor's office tells Action News they submitted a letter earlier this year expressing interest in doing another game on a carrier. He tells us doing the game again would continue to forge relationships with the military and put the city in the spotlight.

Schellenberg hopes to know the outcome of the review from the other events by the next meeting in two weeks.

I can't see how they could not make money off the Florida Georgia game.

If this city was run by anyone with any business sense, there would be no question about spending money again on something that has already failed once. Doing the same thing again and again and expecting different results... that is the definition of insanity!!!
