JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Hundreds of city employees are the latest victim of Jacksonville's budget battle. The city of Jacksonville issued layoffs and demotions to 300 workers. The move will save nearly $4 million a year in salaries.
Jacksonville libraries are bearing the brunt of the budget cuts. This week 36 workers were laid off and 70 employees are moving down to lower positions.
“They're really hardworking people and it's really disappointing to see them lose their jobs,” said Harry Reagan, president of "Friends of the Jacksonville Library."
The city slammed public works as well. It slashed 46 workers there, including garbage collectors and project inspectors.
“It's no fun to lay off an employee,” said Jacksonville City Councilman John Crescimbeni. “I'm sure the mayor doesn't want to do it, I can tell you the council doesn't want to do it but I can tell you the council doesn't have many other options at this point."
Notifications started Tuesday and run through the week. The demotions and layoffs go into effect October 1st. These cuts do not include the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
