JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The city of Jacksonville is going ahead with plans to revitalize the LaVilla neighborhood.

The city believes the area is ready for economic growth and is pushing the area as a gateway to more tourism downtown. A 6,000-square-foot structure is vacant at the site.

On Friday, the city issued a request for proposals at the recommendation of the Downtown Investment Authority.

Commercial development of the LaVilla site would add to a number of major developments in downtown like the EverBank Center relocation.

How many times are we going to pay to revitalize LaVilla only to have it stay empty? No one is going to spend time in that high crime area!
