GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- After Clay County's former information technology director was accused of stealing equipment, the clerk of court is reviewing hiring practices.

"Personally, I'm angry over it. I feel betrayed," said Tara Green, Clay County clerk of court.

Green said Michael Hamilton, 37, took advantage of her trust. Hamilton was hired as the court's IT director, but according to detectives with the Clay County Sheriff's Office, he used his position to steal computer equipment and pawn it off for cash.

Green reported the suspicious activity after noticing something wasn't right.

"For example, my laptop that I used to carry while I'm traveling on Clerk's office business, I was having some problems with it, and he would take it to work on it, but yet it took a little too long for me to get it back," said Green.

According to Green, she's now considering checking potential new hires' credit scores.

"We're going to look into that. We're going to see if that's a viable option for us, particularly for higher level procurement positions," said Green.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office is working with local pawn shops to analyze months of pawn slips. It is still unclear the exact dollar figure on the total number of stolen items.
