GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Clay County leaders came together to debate whether the sheriff should be appointed or elected.

Currently, the sheriff position is elected but the charter review commission discussed appointing a sheriff during a meeting on Monday.

Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said that's a bad idea.

"I really don't think the voters in clay have an appetite or giving up their right to select arguably the most powerful position in government in the community and turn it over to an outside entity," he said.

The debate has a long way to go before any decision is made.

This is poor reporting. The issue was discussed and overwhelmingly defeated in a vote.

Appointed?! no, no, no, NO! as for the so-called 'bubba network', i remember when Clay County did not have big city problems, so i wouldn't exactly use that phrase as a bad thing....

The last thing that is needed in Clay County is a bolstering of the "bubba network". The people of Clay County should elect their sheriff instead of him or her (the bubbas won't appoint a "her") being appointed by Billy Bob and his cohorts.

I cannot believe that this is even being debated.. Obviously the socialism bug has hit Clay County led by a FEW people wanting to pull a power coup ... It was NEVER the intent of Charter Rule to reduce or take away the rights of its citizenry !!! It was meant to protect US from such actions …… We already have less representation in Clay County thanks to "district only elections" for our commissioners ...... SHAME on the "leaders" leading this charge !!! Aren’t there enough REAL problems to be addressing ??? Maybe it’s time to revoke Charter Rule !!!
