GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- One local county is making the grade when it comes to teachers. One hundred percent of teachers in Clay County were rated either effective or highly effective. Only one teacher was found to be unsatisfactory.

In Clay County, I think we were forward thinking in making sure that just wasn't one test one day,” said Toni McCabe, assistant superintendent for human resources. “We looked at district assessment, as well as teacher assessments, on a daily basis and looked at how our students were doing individually.”

McCabe said another key is the involvement of the teachers themselves in the evaluations process, making it less intimidating. Parents said the effort is making a difference in the classroom.

“I think that all of the teachers are very good that's she had,” said Sarah Rouse, who has a child attending Paterson Elementary in Fleming Island. “She's been in Paterson since second grade and all her teachers have been very involved.”

McCabe said the process for next year’s evaluations has already begun.

Evaluation numbers for Clay County and other districts in the state can be found here.
