GREEN COVE SPRINGS Fla.--Neighbors call it a traffic nightmare; The dreaded Clay County commute.

"I can't get anywhere on time because of it," said Whitney Casnellie of Orange Park.

"It takes about 45 minutes to get from Fleming Island to the expressway every day on highway 17," said Billy Finch Jr..

Action news has learned that a new investigation by The Regional Transportation Study Commission Has named the Clay commute one of the worst in our state. It was the second worst commute in 2011, at an average of just over 30 minutes.

"There's a lot of traffic here in town, a lot of people going to work over the Buckman," Said Finch.

The slow ride home has the attention of new Clay Commissioner Diane Hutchings.

"I think it's certainly something we can overcome," said Hutchings.

She says a solution isn't simple but it's in the works. It involves bringing more jobs to Clay, new roads and utilizing new technology already in place, including traffic cameras.

"Eventually they'll be able to route traffic based on flow will be a command center with TV screens," she said.

As for neighbors to put in the miles every day, they say they love where they live even if it means more time behind the wheel.

"You got to deal with traffic if that's the only bad thing in your life that's not so bad," said Finch.

Someone needs to tell Orange Park that putting up red light cameras is just going to make the commute worse because drivers will be short-stopping to make sure they are not issued a ticket.

Contrary to what Hutchings says, cameras will do nothing to enhance traffic flow. All they will do is allow the government to pry into another aspect of our lives. The only way to improve traffic flow is to increase the number of major arteries from Clay to Duval to more than TWO!
