MIDDLEBURG Fla. -- Clay County commissioner hopeful Steve Johnson calls the last five years with his little girl Kelsey his best.

"Kelsey was the light of my life," he said. "She was my little angel and I loved her."

From fishing trips to hunting trips to time spent nearby at the beach, the father-daughter duo were inseparable.

Now Johnson struggles with the reality that he'll never get to hear her little laugh again. Kelsey was killed in a single-car crash off I-295 early Thursday morning.

"I'm hanging in there," he said. "It's the hardest thing I've ever been through in my life."

Behind the wheel of the car was Kelsey's mother and Johnson'S former fiancée, Crystle Heidrick. FHP is investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash, but Johnson calls Heidrick a loving mother who would never do anything to put their little girl in danger.

"I support her mama now with what we're going through," he said.

Johnson says he wants to thank the people of Clay County for their outpouring of condolences and support. Right now he has no plans to pull out of the election next November.

Kelsey will be laid to rest on Monday at Russell Haven Rest Cemetery. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. at Middleburg United Methodist Church.
