JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Anyone answering the phone in the Jacksonville area this week should beware.

That's the warning issued today by the local Better Business Bureau. The bureau issued a warning today about scam artists posing as debt collectors.

"They claim to be a debt collection agency and they convince you that you owe money," said Tom Stephens, president of the Northeast Florida Better Business Bureau.

His office has been flooded with complaints in recent days from people getting calls pressuring debt payments for loans they never even received.

Some victims even paid money to the thieves to get the harassment to stop.

"It happens almost all the time and it seems to happen in waves. It looks like we're on a wave now, " Stephens said.

The callers work  for illegitimate agency names that change all the time. Stephens reminds everyone that you'll be notified of debts in writing if they're real. Some victims were even threatened with arrest by the scammers.

"When they claim that they can do that, you know they're either breaking the law as a collection agency or it's a scam," said Stephens.
