GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla.-- A community is remembering a local detective killed one year ago Saturday.
"February 16, 2012 was a tragic day for the Clay County Sheriff's Office," said Sheriff Rick Beseler.
One year later all the emotions were still hard to hide for Beesler as he laid a memorial wreath at the gravesite of Detective David White.
It's a day this community won't forget. White was killed during a raid on a meth house. His partner Matt Hanlin was shot. On Friday, both were given the agency's highest recognition, the Medal of Honor.
But it's not easy. Jennifer White says through all this she's learned to cherish the small things. "It's always hard. We'll never get over this and never forget this," said Jennifer White.
That's why Beseler says there will soon be a reminder to never forget outside the sheriff's office.
A police memorial will honor those killed in the line of duty. While it doesn't bring White back, both the sheriff and White's wife agree they're thankful for the legacy he left behind.
"To answer the call, even when it requires sacrifice like the one made by Detective White," said Beseler.
"Dave's friends embraced us like family and have been such a support to us. I continue to be touched. You've stuck with us and helped so much," said Jennifer White.
The sheriff's office also announced several scholarships set up in White's name.
