JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A handful of employees at a local company are being treated for scabies.
JP Morgan Chase has confirmed with Action News that employees at Chase Bank in the Baymeadows area have been treated and cleared for possible scabies.
Maribel Ferrer, with JP Morgan Chase, says the scabies investigation is isolated to the 2nd floor of the building on Freedom Crossing Trail. Ferrer also says steps have been taken for future cases. That includes replacing the cloth on a number of chairs.
The Duval County Health Department says single cases of scabies are not reportable to the agency, but the department has confirmed it's been in contact with a local company that needed assistance with scabies education and investigation of possible laboratory confirmed cases.
According to the CDC, human scabies is caused by an infestation of the skin by the human itch mite. The most common symptoms of scabies are intense itching and a pimple-like skin rash. The scabies mite usually is spread by direct, prolonged, skin-to-skin contact with a person who has scabies. Scabies can spread rapidly under crowded conditions where close body contact is frequent. Institutions such as nursing homes, extended-care facilities, and prisons are often sites of scabies outbreaks.
