JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- Just one day after police say mentally disabled 11-year-old Ian Flores fell out of the rear emergency exit of a school bus, parents are worried about bus safety again.
Not even a year ago, a Duval County student jumped off the back of a bus on Beach Boulevard. Parents told us that they haven't seen any extra safety measures put in place.
"Nothing has been changed and until they change the situation from where it is now, until they can get something that's safer, it's not going to change. It's going to happen again," said Charlene Ziegler.
Ziegler's granddaughter goes to school with Ian Flores who remains in critical condition.
Since the first incident Ziegler has taken her granddaughter off the bus.
"I take her and pick her up every day," she said.
Duval County Schools tell Action News they are waiting to find out exactly what happened before taking any action.
The bus operator, Durham School Services, provided Action News with this statement:
"We are fully cooperating with the Florida Highway Patrol in its investigation ... Durham takes matters of student safety extremely seriously, and is strongly committed to the safe transportation of all students."
As for Ziegler she helps her granddaughter will one day feel safe riding the bus again.
"I don't think a child should be sent off to school with that over their head," she said.
The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident.
