JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- There's a new push to put guns in the hands of our children's teachers. The controversial proposal is in the Florida legislature right now.

Placing a gun in the hand of a trained teacher would put David Harper's mind at ease when sending his grandchildren off to school.

"Personally I'm for it," said Harper. "Having a defense at the school, some personnel."

As talks of tighter gun contol laws loom, a state lawmaker wants to arm teachers in our schools. Action News obtained HB 1097 School Safety Bill, filed by Rep. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota. It would allow principals or district superintendents to decide which teachers and staff can carry a concealed weapon on campus.

The bill would require district school boards to commission a school safety officer on each campus unless the principal for that school has determined a concealed weapon or firearm licensee to carry firearms on the property.

"I would not anticipate that we would participate in that," said St. Johns Co. School Board member, Bev Slough.

Slough is skeptical of the safety a gun-toting teacher could provide. District police at schools in St. Johns County are armed. That's why she isn't backing the "armed teachers" plan.

"I don't think that's a safe thing. I think we provide for the safety of our children in many, many other ways."

The bill mandates all armed staff members undergo firearms training. That's the reason Harper supports transforming teachers into school security.

"Highly qualified and highly trained, guns aren't for everybody."

Are they crazy?? Ive got a 10year old in the 5th grade... i asked... "so, how many times does your teacher leave the kids in the class unattended?" and she quickly replied "all the time". My child would be home schooled if they decide to put guns in the classrooms. all they need is that mentally unstable or pissed off kid to wait for the teacher to leave and unload the clip on the class. please think about this before you put our children in more danger

If this happens, I hope the training requirements are stricter than this state requires for concealed carry permits. I am all for being armed, but it is way too easy to get a permit in this state. There are no proficiency requirements. Fire one bullet into a barrel of sand and you have met this states experience requirement. As a lifelong firearms owner and long time permit carrier, I want the people that carry guns to know what they are doing - especially in a school environment.

A couple of gun toting teachers, a few signs at the entrances stating "armed teachers on site" would be a lot better deterrant than nothing at all, much cheaper than armed guards. Everytime we have had a mass shooting spree the lunatic shoots himself as soon as someone with a gun shows up, maybe they would find an easier target like someplace with a sign on the door "NO GUNS ALLOWED".

I read an article where this town placed an armed police officer in their school without paying one red cent extra out of pocket etc.. They simply put him up with his own desk with wyfi and he works out of the school, and patrols the school as the same time...ingenious
