EAST POINT, Ga. (WSB-TV) — A Georgia couple says they're still in shock after they were the target of racism at a popular local restaurant.

A U.S. Army sergeant major just back from Kuwait and his wife went to Spondivits in East Point on New Year's Day, but what they found on their key ring when they got home left them deeply hurt.

"I shouldn't have to feel this way," said Candea Aarons.

When Candea and her husband Sam got home they noticed the tag left by the man who they say valet parked their car, with the words "jungle fever," a derogatory slur used to describe interracial couples.

"We have never been so blatantly described in such a blatantly appalling manner ever," Candea Aarons said.

Aarons said the ugly message left her and her husband deeply hurt.

"We had no idea that the valet was looking at us or thinking of us in such a manner," she said.

Channel 2 investigative reporter Aaron Diamant asked for an explanation, but Spondivits leaders refused our requests for an on camera interview.

The restaurant's chef, Glenn Gane, told Diamant the valet worked for a contractor called APS Valet.

In a statement, Gane said, "Spondivits does not tolerate racial speech of any kind."

Later, APS Valet's owner told Diamant by phone that "the valet in question is no long working with APS. APS does not tolerate racism of any kind whatsoever."

But Candea Aarons said the fact the valet got fired is little consolation.

"I was unaware, I was unprepared and I was unaware racism is alive and well," she said.

Neither Spondivits or APS Valet would identify the name of the fired valet, but the Aarons said the individual was African-American.

Verse13~Okay those are the "proper" pants for that uniform. My bad~however, the lowest bidder excuse does nothing for the way this one looks in it. Also, have our active duty stopped receiving uniform allowances in their pay? It still appears that he is overweight and that is what I see with many wearing any uniform. From military personnel to many JSO & FHP. It is unbecoming and frankly sloppy. That said, our service time was '73-'79. Quite a difference between then and now. Remember I have not criticized his service, just that this decedent is foolish. Surely this couple has dealt with many other "difficulties" being a "mixed race couple.

Racism? Coming from a person of color? We've been told that only white folks can be racists.

Whosaysnocan, Those are the pants for that uniform. Do some research before commenting. SGM = > 20 years if service. Top of the enlisted food chain. www.army.mil/asu/ As far as the fit, these things are made by the lowest bidder. Even after coming out of pocket to get these things tailored they still don't fit right.

although it isnt a nice thing i think they need to get over it because racism will never die out because stupid childish ignorant people will never die out. There will always be this crap weather your black gay or fat have a ugly nose or anything. it is ONLY the stupid childish ignorant people who partake in it. They apparently were not raised right. Pray for them is the best thing you can do shake your head and go on and dont let them steal your happiness.

While this is just foolishness, I am more dismayed by the photo of this army member's appearance. He is obviously overweight, something looks very wrong with his uniform as well. When we were active duty we had to be fit and trim. Could not wear our fatigues off base~only to and from "work." When wearing a "dress" uniform, it fit properly & it matched. To me it looks like this guy is wearing blue jeans with his dress uniform jacket displaying all his ribbons/medals. I certainly am not criticizing his service, I thank him for it, but to be offended by this foolishness is undignified of someone holding the rank he does.

Have I ever been the victim of racism??? Well heck yeah I have, Im a middle aged straight white male after all and at the recieving end of most of todays racial and discriminatory laws and societal actions so GIVE ME A BREAK! Also how in the world can these two einsteins think that anyone looks at them in ANY other way? Are they not an interacial couple? Holy jeepers, what fools. Man you guys really need to get your heads out of your butts, or just never leave your house because you are what you are. When I heard "racial" comment i though someone wrote "N-er" or "old cracker" or "colored" or "black" or "not white" or "male" or "person1"(after all, ANY DARN THING nowadays is racial remarks made by racists) not jungle fever. Also shocking truth is the valet was a black dude, too funny right?

If you're going to marry and date against societal norms, then you must be prepared to face the results of that decision. Actions have consequences. I get tired of hearing these people whine when society rejects them for breaking taboos. Shut up and deal with it or do what is right for a change.

Have you ever been the target of racism? I can tell you that when you finally have to face it, it hurts because you would think the world would be over the color of your skin.
