Crowdfunding to connect Downtown and the beaches
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Action News asked beaches resident Amy Galbreath if she would use a luxury bus line that connected the beaches to Downtown.
Without hesitation she said, "I absolutely would."
She said she'd even pay to help get the project started.
"Absolutely," she said. "I would even pay to ride the bus. Pay to advertise on the bus."
That's the concept behind The Connector, a crowdfunding project from the minds of Downtown advocates, The Elbow and Void Magazine.
Void's Eddie Berrang said, "So, crowdfunding is a way that a group of individuals can come together and make donations as small as a dollar and up and say I want to contribute to this cause because I firmly believe in it."
The Connector would make hourly runs on the weekends from the Jax Beach Pier to the Underbelly on Bay Street. Berrang and his crew hope to raise $100,000 by the end of the month to get the project moving.
He said that money would cover the "first six month's operating expenses, insurance, gas, drivers, along with actually acquiring two luxury buses."
The cost of the trip would be $5 one way, $8 round trip.
Galbreath said it would be worth every penny.
"So, people who want to use it and want to get involved with it will help fund it. I think that's a great idea." she said.
If the organizers reach their time and money goals, they say The Connector could be moving by the first of the year.
They say a crowdfunding project like this puts the power in the hands of the people, instead of waiting for local government to meet community needs.
