JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Action News has learned Duval County schools will increase security under the new proposed budget.

Superintendent Nikolai Vitti wants to make sure parents feel safe sending their kids to school. "I think schools are safer than the community believes," said Dr. Vitti.

But Vitti Says theres another problem he keeps hearing about. "We do have I think a perception image," said Dr. Vitti.

Thats why he's putting big bucks behind the promise to fix the District's image. We found out in the new tentative budget for the school district there will be $24 million for security. That's compared to just $3 million last year. Dr. Vitti says kids and parents will see the difference. "We did add SRO for our K-8 and high schools and we've also put a dean of discipline in all middle and high schools," said Dr. Vitti.

Vitti says the money should be a big help to calm parents fears about crime in Duval County Schools. "Our number one responsibility is to make sure children feel safe," said Dr. Vitti.

The final vote on the budget will happen in September.

The most dangerous things at our schools are some of the so-called "students"! Unless they and their "parent(s?)" are dealt with we are wasting our money.

The SRO's are not Officers moonlighting, they are State Certified Police Officers that were hired by the School Board. That is their only job.

Why not hire veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan? Cheaper than police officer, who moonlight at huge pay, and better trained. They as guards would scare most cowards witless. To have to go up against a veteran with a gun is not what they looking for. Instead you will see millions poured into off duty police officers pockets to provide security.
